The Middle Of It All reveals Nic as a fellow traveller to the David Gray of 'White Ladder', or the Peter Gabriel of 'So'; ... the sincerity, humility and subtle liveliness behind even his gloomiest, most introspective moments gives Nic's work far more body than flimsy Dido-ish folktronica. Nic's anti-heroic singing voice is well suited to his journey. An appealing everyman low tenor, it's half-buried in the light-blue instrumentation: quiet, lightly frayed by tension and experience, rising to a worn sweetness. As he sings "folding in on myself, folding into time, / every little lesson draws another little line," he's entirely, empathically believable. |
