I love you with all my musical heart... x Kat Flint - Dec 06
Great Music Venue, the Promoter and staff are cool, Joel is a fabulous and enthusiastic host recorded Emma Jane's session and it sounds Incredible Thanks to Monkey Chews and crew Kingsway (Kookin Production) - Nov 06
Brilliant gig - came all the way down from Scotland to play it and had a great time (could have done without the boiling hot weather, but not much you can do about that, just not used to it in Scotland!) David Burns - Jul 06
Good place to start off gigging in London, my band (echotone) played in March at this place for the first time, and we really enjoyed the atmosphere. Tony, it wasn't us was it? ha ha Lee - May 06
Great venue, nice vibe. Saw two lads play open mic slot - didnt get their name but they were fantastic - big tunes - anyone know their name? Tony - Mar 06
Travelled all the way from Essex to play at a place we had heard so much about...and wasn't disappointed! Great atmosphere, some FANTASTIC music, and the quality was second to none for an open mike. Nice one Joel.... adornostone.com - Jan 06
Monkey Chews is by far the most welcoming and endearing little venue I have ever played.. eARmusic boys, youre simply the best promoters in this city of bandits! xx Yamit - Jan 06
I absolutely loved it, cool lighting, and Greg Hall (i think) was brilliant. That doorman is rather lovely too!! :) Princess - Dec 05
Quite right Geoff, not a select crowd, buzzing from 8pm, fantastic songwriting, and vocals from Molly Mace, Yamit Mamo, and the guys, not a space to stand, let alone sit. Fantastic atmosphere, Joel really helpful, great time had by all, (even before 9pm!!!) Colin - Sep 05
EEEEERRRRR Ryan was you at the venue last night?? It was rocking from, 8pm (joel will back me up!) and let me say if you only arrived after 9pm you missed an incredible talented young singer/songwriter, Molly Mace who, at the end couldn't get out of the door, for people stopping her, and swapping numbers and e-mails, at eight there wasn't a space to stand, let alone sit, so not sure what you were watching??? Yamit Mamo was brilliant, I agree. Geoff - Sep 05
I had the pleasure of going to Monkey Chews last night for the first time, great sound for a small venue, and hosts who are really enthusiastic about the acts. very small but select crowd last night- atomosphere builds up after 9pm. Great performances from Yamit Mamo, and Fly 66. Hard to find place, but worthy of a visit. check it out! Ryan - Sep 05
Thanks everyone for the fantastic reception, and care taken last night to make me feel really at home, especially to joel, simba. Great crowd, and I received fantastic comments, compliments, thanks. Musicians were friendly and talented hope to see you all soon, molly Molly - Sep 05
I've seen many talented musicians at this venue and the other eARmusic gigs. 13th October looks like one not to be missed, All four acts are outstanding. Also check out Snooty Fox and Bullet gigs. adam - Sep 05
Saw Ayu and Kat Flint @ Bullet the other night. Both very different, both very good! 'mon the girls! Andy B - Aug 05
The coolest venue around. Lovely atomosphere and some of the best acoustic sounds around. Great hosts, who really respect the artists, and some 'nearly famous' acts for just £3! Lisa - Aug 05
Well organised Open mic night with friendly proffesional host Joel. Great atmosphere and place to play. Thumbs up. EllyK - Aug 05
Saw Anna Leddra-Chapman last night. Fabulous venue. Joel and the guys who run the place are fantastic, lovely hosts. Great to have a room full of industry people checking out this fab young singer/songwriter. Wish her loads of luck for the future - If last night's anything to go by, I'm sure she'll make it. Lesley - Jul 05
I met Joel the other night and fell in love, i wish he liked boys xx Had a great night will be defo going againx x Andrew Parkinson - Jul 05
Oh dear. I've developed huge crushes on both Joel and Rory. Is that allowed? Monkey Chews and the Snooty Fox are top quality evenings run by true gents, and are by far the nicest open mics I've stumbled across in my (albeit limited) time in London! Good work. k - Jul 05
hello monkey chews is well worth the visit, for many reasons ... great barstaff, decor, and open mike feel is cool ... plus joel, it seems, organises alot of different music nights all thru the week compliments daniel londan - Jul 05
Ah, seems like Kim either got confused and went to the wrong venue or is actually the grendal from the beauwolf - a beast that despises fun...Monkey Chews is the DB's, home to the hairiest host in London - Joel "the legend" Armsden, and indeed the flyist bar staff - withpec to Nichole and Joe! Basically a great place to play if you've got the balls to play infront of a proper audience and not some bunch of mutes. Daniel Scoot - Jun 05
Played one song here last night. Best open mic experience of the last 4 years since I came back from Spain. Crowd up close and personal, a guy who could actually play joined in on harmonica and turned my simple "Ya won't catch me cheatin' on the woman I'm cheatin' on my wife with" into an epic blues jam with a great vibe. More please. BTW thanks to Joel and Rory for talking me into playing, because I was very reluctant given the noise level and the somewhat distorted PA. I'll be back, man. Set up the Caucasians, Gary. Catfish - Jun 05
Man, last weeks gig was nothing less than awesome. It was rammed, and Deve Best and Kenjiro were quality. Sound was amazing too, just need an extra window guys. Overheard quite a few industry convies too, few labels sniffing around. Def going back, music again, was top notch. Maguie - May 05
I love this venue! Thankyou so much for a really great night, and for giving me the opportunity to perform live- look forward to returning soon. Anna Leddra Chapman - Apr 05
Some really cool and talented artists are starting to turn up to this open mic night . . the performing envelope is being pushed . . .the standard is getting alot better . Cant wait to play again . Mark James - Apr 05
Def. In Vincent's Face's bar of choice. Great scene, great music and a top host. Ben - Apr 05
A friendly and well run open-mic that seems to attract some outstanding artists. I shall certainly make the effort to go back. Oli H - Apr 05
Just a quick note to say well done to the dudes at this bar. Enjoyed the music, enjoyed the atmosphere and was well impressed at the vibe they got in there, mad approachable peeps who are more than happy to make everyone feel welcome. See you next Tuesday!!!! Maguire - Apr 05
Despite the instructions on the website and frequent consultation of my A-Z i managed to get lost in the dark wastelands surrounding Monkeychews. I even failed to get mugged. On arrival, the next obstacle was to find the entrance (tried to open 3 doors, it's the one with the scooter parked), but with all the determination of the veteran gig-goer (and the help of a friendly young lady who took pity at the confused geezer with the A-Z)i finally managed to park my bum inside to see what's going on at this lively open mic. If you are going to play there - don't expect the vac-treatment. You'll be playing in the corner of a pub, there is no stage, and people around you will be doing pub-things like talking, laughing and drinking Guinnes, at over 3 squid a pint a tad pricey. The vibe was civilised and relaxed, the bar staff friendly, and there was applause after each song ranging from polite to "wow". Just don't expect everyone to hush, and in the absence of any visible hosting between acts, it will be entirely up to you to capture their attention. If you fail to do that, you can't blame it on the sound, because that's surprisingly good, excellent in fact, considering the circumstances. On balance, a good night out, and worth the trek. Good to hone the stagecraft part of your performance skills. As pub venues go, ignore at your disadvantage. Mart - Mar 05
wow! some tough reviews!! hope the walk home was ok - haven't had trouble yet and haven't heard of any! sorry you had a bad one kim - come down for a music night on tues or weds and i'll get you a beer. we usually get a nice atmosphere going (had people dancing for an acoustic gig t'other week - woohoo!!) so always want to keep up the standard. hope to see you tues/thurs! joel - Mar 05
this venue is slapbang in the middle of a very dodgy area of west kentish town.So watch your handbags/ mobiles/pockets and wear a cycle helmet as the locals creep up behind you with coshes.don't wear bling.take a german shepherd with you. henry mancini - Mar 05
This place is for total losers - don't bother. It's dirty, dusty, unhygenic and expensive. It's bar staff are irritating (for some reason they think they are really cool & they aren't) and there are far better pubs in the area. It is also vitually empty most of the week. Don't waste your life away. Kim Worby - Mar 05
this is a fantastic and well organised event . i drive from Nottingham just to perform 3 songs .. its that good . also try out "Snooty fox" in Highbury . Sparky - Mar 05
That Naveed Ijaz plays there sometimes and he is a smashing performer. His manager is a top bloke. Ronald the barman is a splendid fellow, ably supported by the divine Nicole. Joel and Simba are, indeed, two gentlemen of the highest order. Don't go without a thirst 'cos it's an oases Derm' - Feb 05
Popped down earlier in the year and meant to post a comment. Really great venue, good quality of performance and Joel and Simba are absolutely top boys. See you soon, guys! Josef - Jan 05
Lovely venue, great atmosphere and in Joel, the friendliest most down to earth promoter you could ask for. Get your ass down there! cult.with.no.name - Jan 05
This is a great place! The upstairs room has atmosphere residing in the walls and when there are a few people in, it feels wonderful. Check it out !! Roger Askew - Dec 04
What a cracking place! We made the trip from Guildford up to Camden, only to be greeted by the biggest dude in north london, Joel "the man" Armsden. He certainly made us feel welcome, we enjoyed some qualty bangers and mash at the pub before playing a few tunes on the open mic and giving out free cds, give Joel a call and go down there! Alchemy - Nov 04
Went to Monkey Chews last week (16th Nov) to see what the fuss was about. Great venue for open mic and a great atmosphere. The standard of the performers was incredible. The guy running the place (Joel I think), seemed cool as well. Get down there! Tim - Nov 04
Monkey Chews is fine and dandy and Joel, as a host, is pretty handy! The hairy Sampras has kindly decided to furnish us with full gig slots, startin' from November the 4th, wayhay! so come down and play! Danny Scoot - Oct 04
this place has a real atmosphere to it, it's up there with the most random looking pubs I've been to, but it is agreat place to play. Joel is one of the nicest hosts I have had to chance to meet since playing in London with huge enthusiasm . I went there for the first time on my own and I did not feel at all out of place or uncomfortable like i have done when going to other places on my own. Get down there the guy will make you feel really at home and you can see some really great people perform aswell. ben - Sep 04
This night has deservedly gone from strength to strength. I've had the good fortune to see some top class acts battling the heat over the past couple of months. Should be moving to thev upstairs bar with any luck. Joel goes above & beyond the call of duty by recording artists & giving them a CD compilation buckshee! A rare gent indeed! Adam Wilson - Sep 04
This place is rocking! You need to get that upstairs room up and running too Joel!! Nice night... Stevo - Aug 04
Perfect for the bar! We've been waiting for this for a while. I came to the first one and have only missed one since - doesn't surprise me how much it's exploded since back then. There's been signed bands from a few labels and real quality unsigned musicians too. Corking night... Stan - Jul 04
This is a great place to play! Joel is a fabulous and enthusiastic host. The atmosphere is very cool, and the musicians are talented and friendly. See you next week! Marlo Donato - Jun 04
A very nice place for live music. All the atmosphere of The Snooty Fox and better sound quality. First night yesterday was busier than anticipated - cant wait for this one to pack out. Steph - Jun 04
